Buy Low Candidates | Week 12
Slow start, no problem. Consider making a move for these stars to help out your lineup down the stretch!
Welcome aboard the burning ship! Today we have week 12 buy low candidates. If you know what's best for you, check out these picks below. You won't regret it.
Patrick Kane (CHI - RW)
Kane has posted 25 points in 33 games (62 point pace) compared against his 92 points in 78 games last year showing significant struggles to start the year on a weak Blackhawks team. This has him at a 12 goal pace which would be the lowest in his career. Part of the reason being a shooting at a 4.1% clip, well below his career average of 11.4%. Regression in this category alone would bring Kane to 13 goals in 33 games and a 82 point pace on the year. Combined with a higher shot rate compared with his career (3.7 vs 3.3 per game) we can see Kane taking it upon himself to drive offence. These are promising stats given that even while on a bad team, Kane is driving offence and is likely dealing with an extended streak of bad puck luck.
On a qualitative basis there are rumors that Kane is a trade target for teams such as the Penguins, Rangers, or Kings which would mean a significant upgrade in line mates to be playing with the likes of Zibanejad, Panarin, Crosby, Malkin, Kopitar, Fiala, etc. No shade against Max Domi who is having a strong campaign by his standards, but these are bona fide all-stars.
Try and sell high on these players to make this move:
Jamie Benn
Travis Konecny
Rickard Rakell
Matt Boldy
Carter Verhaeghe
Hampus Lindholm
Filip Hronek
Filip Forsberg (NSH - LW)
Forsberg has 10G 16A (26 PTS) pacing him for 65 points on the season. In 2021-2022 Forsberg had 42G and 42A in 69 games which was a 100 point pace and career highs in nearly all offensive categories. An interesting take on Forsberg is that he has a reputation for being a second half player. With those amazing stats in 21-22, Forsberg only had 14 goals (compared to 10 this year) through 33 games. This could suggest an extremely strong performance from Forsberg coming down the stretch.
Despite having an outlier year in shooting percentage last year (18.6% vs. career 12.7%) there is still room for Forsberg to have a strong second half as his current season shooting clip is 9.4% with an identical shot rate and marginally more powerplay time. While you probably shouldn't expect a 100-point pace for the rest of the season Forsberg has proven in his career he has offensive upside and a single hot streak can catapult him up the point leader rankings, as well as you up your fantasy rankings.
Try and sell high on these players to make this move:
Reilly Smith
Travis Konecny
Rickard Rakell
Matt Boldy
Carter Verhaeghe
Jamie Benn
Joel Eriksson Ek
Valeri Nichushkin (COL - LW/RW)
Nichushkin is having an injury riddled campaign having ankle surgery early in the season and then recently reinjuring his surgically repaired ankle with no timetable for return. Last season Nichushkin broke out with strong deployment on a loaded Avalanche team with a 69 point pace compared with his previous season high of 35 point pace in his rookie season. So far through the season Nichushkin is at over a point per game pace albeit with a small 15 game sample size however his shooting percent and shot pace is not out of line from last season and he looks to have cemented his role on PP1 while healthy. Look to be receiving at minimum last years Nichushkin with point per game upside on this one.
Try and sell high on these players to make this move:
Reilly Smith
Travis Konecny
Rickard Rakell
Matt Boldy
Carter Verhaeghe
Jamie Benn
Joel Eriksson Ek
Aleksander Barkov (FLA - C)
Barkov has 6G 16A in 25 games this season (72 point pace) while shooting only 7.3% which is well below his career average of 13.9%. In his previous four seasons Barkov has only average less than a point per game once (in a short 19-20 season) and has 100 point upside when he's able to play for a full season.
All the stats would indicate positive regression for Barkov as he has more PP TOI, a relatively equal PP time share, more TOI total, equal shot rate to last season (above career average) and a below career average shooting %.
While the price might not be as cheap on this one as Barkov is likely considered a strong "keeper" by most who owns this could be a league winning move down the stretch if you're able to pull this off.
Consider paying a little more with the types of:
Ryan-Nugent Hopkins
Bo Horvat
Pierre-Luc Dubois
Artemi Panarin
Zach Hyman
John Tavares
